This marks the first time that a troupe of Tibetan nuns have gone on tour in the West to stage performances of sacred music, dance, theatre and debate, and to introduce audiences to the central role women have played in the spiritual life of Tibet. They belong to the first generation of nuns to be taught the ritual arts which hitherto have been the exclusive domain of the monks. Sacred music and dance, the creation of sand mandalas, and formalized monastic debate are amongst the skills that the Khachoe Ghakyil nuns will be sharing with North American audiences. This not-for-profit tour has a twofold aim: to share the nuns' accomplishments with their sisters and brothers in the West, and to raise funds for the nunnery itself, which cannot currently accommodate the many Tibetan refugee women who long to take ordination and join the nuns' community. Every penny not spent on covering tour expenses will go to the nunnery in Nepal.
